Preparing and Conducting

Leonard Bernstein's MASS      SUMMER 2018

 

 

​As principal guest conductor and director of choral activities for the New Hampshire Music Festival, I am pleased to invite you to join me NEXT summer for a graduate conducting course which will focus on score preparation, performance practice, rehearsal techniques, and conducting challenges in Leonard Bernstein's MASS. This course is offered through Plymouth State University's Graduate Studies program.

 

I will be preparing the work with a chorus of 80-90 auditioned singers and will conduct the August 2nd performance with the professional orchestra of NHMF, now in its 63rd season.  All rehearsals and the performance take place at the Silver Center for the Arts at Plymouth State University in Plymouth, New Hampshire.

 

  • Students will work with Dr. Perkins in rehearsals, conducting class, and performance with the New Hampshire Music Festival Orchestra and Symphonic Chorus.  Course requirements vary with credits.​  1-3 credits.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

3 Credits

 

  • Students enrolled for 3 graduate credits must attend all class meetings, rehearsals, and the performance.

 

  • Students must sing in all rehearsals and the performance.

 

  • Students will have 3 private conducting lessons with Dr. Perkins, in addition to the class meetings.

 

  • Students will choose a research topic related to some aspect of the major work being studied and write a 5-7 page paper.  

 

  • Students must follow MLA format and the proposal must be saved as a PDF file and emailed to me.  (danp@plymouth.edu)

 

  • The paper must be a detailed study of whatever topic is selected and should represent both careful research and original thought.

 

1 Credit

 

  • Students enrolled in 1 graduate credit must attend nearly all rehearsals and the performance.  Students may observe OR sing in the rehearsals and performance. 

 

  • Students will write a summary and evaluation of their experience learning and performing the major work being studied.  This must be emailed to me.  (danp@plymouth.edu)

2 Credits

 

  • Students enrolled for 2 graduate credits must attend the first class meeting and at least one additional class meeting, all rehearsals, and the performance.

 

  • Students must sing in the performance.

 

  • Students will have two private conducting lessons with Dr. Perkins, in addition to the class meetings.

 

  • Students will write a summary and evaluation of their experience learning and performing the major work being studied.  This must be emailed to me.  (danp@plymouth.edu)
